Public Meeting to Discuss Potential Soil Clean

March 16, 2010

NASA is planning to remediate two sites on Wallops Island where contaminated soil is present. During the public meeting, NASA will discuss the various alternatives for remediating the sites and the public is invited to provide comments on the Proposed Remedial Action Plan.

Site 5 – Paint Stain and Site 12 – Former Wind Tunnel are contaminated with by-products from historic paint booth operations and jet engine testing activities prior to 1960. The Proposed Remedial Action Plan, which is provided for public review and comment under the 'Remediation Program' link within the 'Documents' link, describes the remedial alternatives for mitigating threats from contaminated soil posed to human health and the environment at Sites 5 and 12. In addition, this proposed plan identifies excavation and off-site disposal as NASA’s preferred remedial alternative for contaminated soil at the sites and explains the rational for NASA’s preference. During the public meeting, NASA will discuss the various alternatives for remediating the sites. Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality will be available for discussion.
