Program Areas - Wastewater
Program Manager: Julie Shane
The NASA Wallops Flight Facility owns and operates a state-of-the-art 300,000 gallon per day wastewater treatment facility. The wastewater system is fully permitted and must be operated in accordance with the Clean Water Act, which is administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. To ensure a high quality discharge well below permitted limits, the WFF Team tests the wastewater discharge on a daily basis.
In addition to ensuring wastewater quality, the WFF Environmental Office (EO) is also responsible for ensuring the quality of stormwater discharges from the facility. The EO and the Code 228 Facilities Management Branch (FMB) work together to coordinate management of the facility's Erosion and Sediment Control Plan and oversight of construction sites. The EO is responsible for coordinating all permit activities related to construction projects. The EO hosts the facility's annual Stormwater Pollution Prevention Team meeting and provides annual Stormwater Pollution Prevention training to tenants of the facility.
